Essential Soap Making Supplies And Equipment
If you've decided to make your own soap, then you can go a few different routes with regard to soap making supplies and equipment. The very simplest route of all is to get a soap making kit, which often saves you the measuring and mixing of individual ingredients, since they're usually all included in pre-measured amounts. The simplest type is a melt and pour kit. It contains a glycerin base that you melt, and oils and additives that you put in before pouring into the molds provided. There are more complicated and specialized kits as well, which may contain extra equipment.
But if you're creating your handmade soaps pretty much from scratch, then you'll need other supplies as well. For all your work, keep in mind that whatever equipment you use for these projects should only be used for making soap from then on. Do not re-use these items in general kitchen work. This includes stainless steel pots or double boilers, mixing bowls, pitchers, measuring spoons, spatulas and any utensils. Your soap making supplies and equipment should be dedicated only to making soap. Your usual ingredients, especially the lye, should never be ingested, and keeping your tools separate will ensure that your food remains safe.
As you experiment with soap making from scratch, you'll find that some measurements can be played with, so you're adding slightly more of this oil or a bit less of that one. But you absolutely must measure the correct amount of lye in proportion to the other ingredients, so a piece of equipment that must be included in your soap making supplies is a very precise and accurate weigh scale. It's hard to say which is more important, getting all the weights correct, or the wearing of protective goggles, rubber gloves and a long sleeved top when working with the lye itself.
You'll also likely need a couple of candy thermometers, one used with the lye and the other with the oils. If you use wooden soap molds, then you'll want to line them with wax paper to make sure the soap doesn't adhere to the wood. You will add other things to your soap making supplies and equipment as you go along and develop your own methods, but your most important supplies will be the ones that help you measure your ingredients with absolute accuracy, and the ones that keep you safe while you're going through the process.

This type of soap is usually made from pre-existing soap, whether it's a handmade soap, shavings and segments from old chunks of commercial soap, or purchased flakes. Make Soap And Be Safe
For this reason, when you make soap, it might even be best if you isolate yourself so you're not distracted by a pet or by any kids in the house. Have all ingredients nearby before you start, so you don't have to leave the workspace unexpectedly, and perhaps lay down protective coverings on counters where you'll be working. Keep all your soap making resources, like pots, utensils, and especially the lye, well labeled and separated from normal kitchen supplies.
