Finding All Your Soap Supplies And Equipment
As you embark on your soap making enterprise, you may expect that all your soap supplies will be easy to find. However, some ingredients might take longer to acquire than others and be more difficult to locate, while your basic equipment will be found quite easily. If you intend to start soap making from scratch, then plan carefully and take the time in advance to be sure you have every ingredient and every piece of equipment needed, in order to make this project a success.
The equipment used for creating handmade soaps, like pots, bowls and utensils, can be found at any kitchen store. By no means should regular kitchen equipment be used for these projects. Once you've used a pot for soap, it should only be used for soap from that point on. And there are other soap supplies you might not have thought of when you began planning. For example, goggles, rubber gloves and long sleeves must be worn when using lye, a scale for accurately measuring down to a gram or tenth of an ounce, and a couple of candy thermometers will be needed.
You can usually get soap making kits from places like craft stores. Even discount or department stores with craft sections may have such kits. Many oils that you'll need, like avocado, jojoba and palm, can easily be acquired from a local health food or natural body products store. Olive oil can be bought at a supermarket, but you do need to double check that it's pure olive oil that isn't blended with other types of oils. Soap supplies such as natural colorings might be found in your own kitchen, including things like cloves, cucumbers and carrots.
The one ingredient among your soap supplies that is most essential is also the one that may be the hardest to find. Soap cannot be made without lye. So the fact that you won't find it in most supermarkets and might not even find it in some hardware stores could throw a monkey wrench into your plans. If you consult other soap makers in your area to find out where they buy their soap making supplies, then they may give you some tips, or you might also be able to order your own stash through a hardware store. Once you do add this last ingredient to your supplies, however, you will finally be ready to begin your handmade soap odyssey. You'll be glad you did all this preparatory work when you proudly unveil your first batch of finished soaps.
